Omega Sacrifice- Chapter 1

Blurb for Omega Sacrifice: One is ruthless. One is deceived. One will win.

An alpha of the Pine Creek Lake pack killed Devon's father. But when Devon discovers his true mate amongst his enemies, will a forbidden love force Devon to choose between his pack and his heart?

Seeing the love of his life choose another, Zeke faces a bleak future as an omega with no hope of a mate. But when he stumbles into the arms of a strange and handsome alpha, is this a second chance for a happy ending? Or will he be cast aside…again?

Star-crossed mates must make the ultimate sacrifice to save each other.

Rain beat down on Devon’s fur as he ran with his pack brothers alongside the swelling Pine Creek Lake to avenge his father. Two weeks ago, a pack search party had found the body in a shallow grave weighted down with jagged stones. Jeff had been stabbed, bitten, clawed, his neck broken, and someone had hit him in the back of the head, cracking his skull.

A hard death for a hard man.

Devon had respected his father—and hated him. But if Devon’s grandfather Angus was right, and the Pine Creek Lake wolves had murdered Jeff and kidnapped his mate, then Devon had a duty to see that justice was done. Devon would not shirk this duty, not if it gave him even the slightest chance to earn the respect of his pack brothers and his grandfather.

Beneath the heavy cloud cover and unrelenting rain, it was hard to tell when afternoon became night, but soon the gray dimmed to twilight and then darkness. They passed the lake and, avoiding the main path, strode silently through the woods toward where the other pack made their settlement. It wouldn't do to get too close. Even a pack as remote as this one, as cheerful and lazy as Angus claimed they appeared, would still have patrols guarding their territory. Especially at night.

Angus had them gather beneath an outcropping of rock. Devon's shoulders and the crest of his spine were sore from where his backpack had rubbed against his skin and fur when running. He shifted, shivering as the cold, wet air blew over his naked human body. He unclipped the pack and rifled through it for some clothing. The others were doing the same. Devon changed quickly into sweatpants, a sweatshirt, and a rain parka in camouflage green and brown.

Slipping into his boots, Devon squatted at his grandfather's right hand. Normally this was a place of honor, but the true power lay on Angus’s other side, with Devon's cousin Karl.

Beneath the outcropping of rock, Angus explained their next steps. They needed to map out the patrol routes of the other pack’s guards. Three of their stealthiest wolves would then sneak through the line and plant explosives. Devon didn't like that plan. Though Angus assured them the explosives were only a warning, and would not put the omegas and betas of the other pack in danger, a choking grip of shame overcame Devon at the thought of killing innocents, by intent or by accident.

The omegas and betas of this pack did not deserve to die for the failure of their alphas. But it wasn't Devon's decision to make, and he wasn't strong or stupid enough to challenge Angus's leadership.

“Devon, Marek, Paul…you're in first. Recon. Got it?”

Devon nodded, even as he wondered why his grandfather wanted Karl to stay behind. Probably Angus just liked Karl better and gave him privileges. Or maybe Devon was being given a perverse sort of honor, to survey the area of the enemies who had murdered his father. Either way, it meant Devon would be out first and the longest in the pounding rain. Why had he bothered shifting out of wolf form at all? At least the fur kept him warm. The parka, sweats, and sodden boots only made him more aware of how miserable and cold he was.

But he did as he was ordered. He stripped again and folded his clothes into the backpack before strapping it on and shifting to wolf with the others.

The faster he got this done, the faster he could get back to where it was dry.

Devon easily made it within fifty yards of the outermost squat cabin. Close enough to see the electric yellow light through the slats of partially open blinds. Devon sniffed at the air, wary that he might be caught by a patrol. Maybe it was a trap?

Or maybe these Pine Creek Lake wolves were just lazy. He shouldn't have been able to get this close.

Cold rain seeped through Devon’s fur, and he blinked rapidly, trying to keep the droplets out of his eyes. He wouldn’t sneak any closer. Not yet. Instead, he crept just outside the cleared area around the settlement, sheltering himself near the tree line and low bushes.

What if Angus was wrong? These wolves seemed peaceful. Maybe they hadn't murdered his father. Maybe they hadn’t fired the opening salvo in what would be a short and bloody war. What if someone else left Jeff’s body on this pack’s grounds to implicate this pack? By tooth and claw, in one fenced-off area was a roughly made playground!

These weren’t hardened killers.

Devon was so lost in his thoughts that he missed the sound of footsteps splashing through the muddy puddles and loose, slippery rocks until the omega was almost on top of him.

Devon froze. In his wolf sight, the omega male was a monochrome figure in gray, brown, and tan. He had a round face and light hair, escaping in scraggly curls that were tied at the nape of his neck in an elastic band. If Devon had been human, his mind might have drifted to poetry. The soft roundness of his figure was hinted at tantalizingly beneath a thin rain jacket and sodden yoga pants. His lips were full, his nose upturned endearingly at the tip.

The omega smelled like the sweetness of fresh kill, and Devon wanted to lick him. To taste him.

Stupid with desire, Devon whimpered.

This was bad. A deep, instinctual part of him recognized that the omega in front of him was his true mate.

The omega froze in place. “Who's there?” He wiped the sleeve of his jacket over his face and blinked. Squinting into the darkness. “Hello? Who’s there?”

Devon held his breath. This omega was his true mate, and instinct demanded that Devon make his claim. But he had a job to do. If he revealed himself, he would put his entire pack in danger.

The omega sniffed the air. Between the rain and his weaker human senses, he should not have been able to smell Devon. But he tensed, and Devon recognized both fear and curiosity as the omega turned toward him. “You're an alpha. I don't know you.” The growing panic was evident in his tone. He would shout for help soon. Devon was surprised he hadn't shouted yet. Maybe there was some way to salvage this. Devon shifted, and then hands raised, he stood.

Cold rain streamed down his body. Though Devon knew he lacked the essential viciousness that made an alpha truly strong, none of that was reflected in his body. A surge of pride washed over him as the omega's lips parted, and his eyes grew wide, and Devon smelled his desire.

“I'm Devon.”

“Ezekiel. Zeke. Your, um…” Zeke ran his tongue between his lips, and imagining that tongue in those lips on him made Devon's cock swell.

Devon kicked himself. He should have stayed hidden. He should have killed Zeke before the omega had seen him. But Zeke was his true mate, and even if he hadn't been, Devon didn’t have it in him to kill an innocent omega in cold blood. He wasn't his father. He wasn’t his grandfather. Which meant Devon would have to take Zeke with him, at least until all of this was over.

Zeke was his true mate, and there was no way he was going to let the omega come to harm.

But first, he had to make Zeke comfortable enough to trust him.

“I have some clothes in this backpack,” Devon said, shrugging his shoulders. “Do you mind if—?”

“Yeah! You should do that!” Zeke swallowed. “Not that I mind looking at you. I mean, you’re really hot and—” He shook his head, and judging by the tint of embarrassment in his scent, Devon guessed that Zeke had flushed as well.

It was perfect. And terrifying.

Devon had never imagined he would find his true mate. He hadn’t even wanted to claim an omega. It seemed like too much responsibility, and he refused to treat them like objects to be kicked around, fucked, and ignored as his father had. Now that he had found his mate, all he wanted was to cherish Zeke. Devon wanted to discover what made Zeke shiver and moan with delight. Devon wanted to knot inside Zeke and spill his seed until they both passed out from the pleasure of it.

He imagined Zeke’s lush belly growing large with their children as he held the omega, the scent of their mating thick between them. It was almost too much to bear.

Devon needed to prove himself worthy to lead his pack. Now, not only for himself, but also for the omega in front of him. His mate.

Though Angus had assured Devon that the explosives near the Pine Creek Lake settlement were meant to be a distraction, Devon didn’t like taking that risk. Especially now that he knew his true mate was a part of this pack. Though Zeke's pack seemed foolishly comfortable with allowing young alphas and omegas to have free access to each other, Zeke didn't seem damaged by it.

Zeke woke coughing. Devon pounded on his chest. It was still dark and freezing. The underwater river had spat them out in a knee-deep rivulet at the mouth of a cave. How far had it carried them? But after being pulled underwater, Zeke couldn't remember anything else. He couldn’t have been under that long. Otherwise, he’d have died.

The omega averted his gaze. Devon didn't blame him. They had to return to the Pine Creek Lake settlement and do what they could to avert disaster. As much as Devon wanted to convince his omega to run away with him, to have a life away from the relentless politics and power grabs that had punctuated Devon's entire life, he couldn’t ask Zeke to sacrifice his own pack for that dream.

Devon wasn't sure he knew the difference anymore.
